Perchta, also called Frau Percht, is a mythical figure from Germanic and Slavic mythology who appears during the Twelve Nights between Christmas and New Year and is often interpreted as a symbol of the transition from darkness to light, from cold to warmth. Perchta is considered the goddess of the in-between spaces, the transitions from old to new between the years. She is said to punish laziness and reward diligence and helpfulness. Perchta is sometimes associated with Frau Holle, possibly as her southern German counterpart. She often combines good and evil qualities, light and darkness. She is considered a bringer of luck and a protector. After Frau Holle was increasingly degraded over time into a wild and desolate monster, many of her good and magical qualities were transferred to the "Mother Mary" venerated in the Christian faith. She wears a white dress and a blue cloak.
